The General Reborn

I remember everything from before. I had been chosen to be summoned again, to aid in the onslaught of the Wraiths. We have been at war for so long now, but I won’t give up this time. The Elder of the Untamed had told me once before, “Those with strength, but the lack of courage to use it, shall fall.” From my previous onslaught, I had returned; returned to a world I hadn’t known anymore. The world changed, the Wraiths outnumbered us tenfold from before; ready to fight, I grabbed my axe, and made my way to the new Elder of the Untamed. Walking through the City of the Lost, I realized something; in my absence, and excluding the Wraith infestation, the world is so much more beautiful now than it ever was. The City of the Lost was a bustling community. The markets were open, the magnificent statues of Heroes were still at the heart of the city, and then I saw him. The new Elder. My heart was throbbing, but I took the steps just like I had before.

“Welcome, young warrior! Welcome, to the City of the Lost. I am the Elder of the Untamed, Taro. What might your name be, son?” The Elder bowed, as did I. My mouth started to dry and my knees felt weak.

“My name? My name is Carmelo the Untamed. I’m known as the Midnight terror, the Crouching Tiger of the night, if you will.”

“Carmelo, would you follow me into the cave for a moment? There’s something private I’d like to discuss with you.” He looked at his Commanding Chief, and he took the hint. We walked separate directions, into the rocky barren. The Elder lead me into a room with a big table placed in the center. Those who were in the room were asked to leave, and they walked through the door on the opposite end of the cave. Lanterns hung from the ceiling, giving an ominous glow to the area. The Elder lead me to the foot of the table, and I saw a chart of the world.

“Carmelo, my child, you are a very special case. Never before has anyone ever retained memories of their past life, especially so early. Even the most Enlightened of us only have faint dreams. You may be the biggest asset to win this war. As you know, we have an alliance with the Humans and Winged Elves now, aiding us to win this war.”

“What, with the Elves? We’re only going to get double crossed again!”

“Desperate times call for desperate measures, Carmelo. The Wraiths have attacked all three races. Even the hidden Tideborn and legendary Earthguard are helping us. We have to have every asset to win this war if we hope to ever claim this world again.”

“Tideborn, Earthguard? Wait, you don’t mean…?”

“Yes, I do. The very fate of Perfect World is at hand, we need everything. Which reminds me, we’ve lost contact with the Elder of the Elves and Humans, and I’d like you to check in on them. Put tensions aside, and make amends with your new allies. Once you get back, I’ll have something waiting for you. Oh, and take this; show off what the Untamed are all about.” With a sly smile, he handed me a giant axe; one that seemed to have bathed in blood once before. Staring at the weapon, visions of the past flashed behind my eyes, reminding me of all the bloodshed during the previous war.

“General, we have to fall back! There are too many of them!” Blood sprayed against the grass under the moonlight. The stars shined brightly behind the dusk clouds, it would have been peaceful if my axe hadn’t of made new friends that night. Hacking and slashing, back to back with my Lieutenant, brought down the hammer of justice.

“Lieutenant, don’t let up for even a moment! We must win this war!”

One by one, my men fell. The Wraiths teamed against us with magic we’ve never seen before, elements that the Untamed were unaware of. I knew then that this war wasn’t going to be won anytime soon.

“General Carmelo! We have to fall back!”

“No. You go! I’ll hold them off; I’ll buy you some time! Just go!” One by one, they ran, fighting their honorable will to stay and fight. They were good men, but they had families waiting for them. I only joined the ranks because I had nothing to lose.

“Come on, you dirty Wraiths! I’m right here! Is that all you’ve got?” Arms stretched out, Pan Gu’s axe pointed towards the swarm; I clasped the armor on my breast. “They fought for me, even though they could have died. Now, here I am, ready to fight for them! Come Wraiths, give me all you got!”

I brought my arms down, clasped tightly onto the faith of Pan Gu, using his power to slice and tear through the flooding army. One by one, I chopped through the flimsy armor of the Wraiths, cutting most in two. The bloodshed was more than satisfactory; especially when I found the General of the opposing force.

I sliced through the Wraiths, one by one, until they ultimately pinned me down and threw my axe away. Down on my knees, head poised out, I heard the clamber of heavy armor walking towards me.

“Carmelo, it’s been fun, but it’s your time.”

“You were corrupted by the Wraiths, Shin, just like the rest of them! You lost focus of what we wished to accomplish!”

“No, Carmelo, you lost focus. I chose the winning side. You chose your tiger brethren.”

“You chose your winged adversaries. You betrayed the Untamed!”

“You knew when we met I was a Winged Elf. It’s time for you to die.”

I saw the end through my own eyes. The treachery of my friend, my brother, replayed over and over in my head while the endless void devoured me. Time to sleep.
