Young to Address Virtual Item Monetization and Migrating to “Free to Play”

at Game Developers Conference 2012

March 1, 2012—Foster City, CA—Today, Perfect World Entertainment announced that online games veteran, John Young, has joined the company as vice president of business development and corporate communications. In this role, Young will build partnerships and shape the brand identity of the company.  Perfect World Entertainment operates as the U.S. and European arm of Perfect World Co., Ltd. (NASDAQ: PWRD), a pioneering online game developer and operator headquartered in China.

Perfect World Entertainment currently boasts a roster of ten online free-to-play games, including Blacklight Retribution, Star Trek Online, Perfect World International, War of the Immortals, and Forsaken World, and Young is constantly seeking out developers of high quality games to add to that list. Additionally, Young is tasked with building and nurturing relationships with industry partners who may benefit from Perfect World Entertainment’s full suite of services that help developers create, publish and monetize their games from start to finish.

“We’re delighted that John has joined us,” said Alan Chen, CEO of the company.  “His many years of experience in developing and publishing online games allows us to work closely with our partners to turn great teams and ideas into profitable products.”

Prior to joining Perfect World Entertainment, Young ran the publishing and revenue design functions for Gazillion Entertainment, publisher of games such as Marvel Super Hero Squad. He built the platform to launch Gazillion games, designed the revenue models and design systems for microtransaction games, and led platform engineering, website creation, administrative tools, customer service, billing, anti-fraud, safety, community, data analytics, and publishing production for Gazillion’s online games.

Prior to Gazillion, Young launched and operated an online game for early "free to play" game pioneer gPotato (Gala-Net). He was the first business development executive at Massive Incorporated, signing publishers in complex deals and eventually running BD for North America and Asia for Massive's unique in-game advertising network.

Young has also held positions as a Financial Analyst for Electronic Arts, as a Venture Capitalist with Easton Hunt Capital Partners, and as a “creative” with J. Walter Thompson building the first web presences for large multinationals in the late 1990s. He is founder and CEO of Peerbetween, the “LinkedIn for personality.”  He earned his MBA from Columbia Business School and his B.A. Honors in Communications from Queen's University in Canada.

“In all my nine years of experience in the gaming industry, design and monetization have evolved rapidly, and I believe that Perfect World Entertainment is leading a new generation of F2P online games,” said Young. “We are working with a great group of developers to publish highly anticipated games and I am thrilled to join the company during this exciting period of growth.”

Young will speak on two panels at the Game Developers Conference 2012 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. He will discuss “Successfully Migrating to F2P” on Wednesday, March 7th between 3:30 – 4:30 in room West 2020, and “Monetization – Lessons Learned” on Thursday, Feb 8th at 5:30, also in room West 2020.
