We just finished setting camp. Going to boil up some coffee and sit a bit… we had a close call and I’m still shaking.

We took a chance and run out a path we found through the Canopy. Foster and a few of the guys scouted ahead and gave us the all-clear when they got back. Foster’s in charge of the scouting party and he’s good at what he does. He’s been through a lot. Doesn’t gab much about it but you can tell if you look into his eyes. Morris had that same look… always lookin’ like they’re fixed on something far off. Like they’re seeing things normal folk can’t. Morris is gone. Foster’s still here and he’s been keeping us outta trouble since… well, since I can remember.

We come around a spur off the main path when things took a bad turn. We got blindsided by a pack of Hollows. Didn’t hear or see them ‘til it was tool late. June took the first hit… one of those fat little bastards knocked her to the ground. She held it off with the flat of her rifle but the damn thing’s teeth were inches from her neck. I lost my cool when I saw her hit the ground and I rushed up to help her. Heard Foster scream out my name but I weren’t listening. I got to June and hacked that Hollow off her then I set to slicin’ up his friends. I like to think I caught those bastards by surprise. I hacked and hacked till my arm all but gave out. Don’t remember much about the fight other’n that. When I looked up Foster and the rest were finishing off what was left of the Hollows… 

I got chewed up a bit but I didn’t notice… til now. They patched me up and June’s fixin’ some stew – says it’ll put back some of the blood I lost. Also said I was a damn fool.

Later we found some open pods just off the track. Scouts must have missed them. Like I said, Foster’s good at what he does but he ain’t perfect. None of us are. I ain’t mad at him or his crew. It happens - but we gotta keep our guard up. Always. I don’t want to think about what could have happened to June. I can’t lose her.
