Preview: Black Ice Harvesting and Shaping Profession

By DwightMC | Fri 09 May 2014 10:00:00 AM PDT

Black Ice is scattered across Icewind Pass and Dwarven Valley corrupting the land, spreading chaos in its wake. This new substance has brought many creatures that look to harness the power of Black Ice. During your adventures through Icewind Dale you too will need to harvest Black Ice using it to create powerful armor through the new Black Ice Shaping profession in order to survive the harsh environment.

Black Ice Harvesting

Harvesting Black Ice is one of the most efficient ways to collect the powerful substance. While you will be rewarded with Black Ice through quests and open world PvP battles, harvesting it will yield more of the resource. Players will be granted a basic Black Ice Pick for harvesting during the introductory quest line in Caer-Konig, but will be able to upgrade the pick via the new profession.

As players adventure through Icewind Dale they will see Black Ice nodes scattered across the zones. There will be two basic nodes, poor and rich. Poor can be mined three times before depleting and Rich six times. Additionally, nodes located in PvP and Heroic Encounter areas will contain more Black Ice. This Black Ice can be used to empower Black Ice armor, trade for items with vendors in Caer-Konig and will also be used in the new Shaping profession.

Black Ice Shaping Profession

Black Ice Shaping is the new profession being introduced with Module 3. Players will need to gather Black Ice along with other profession resources to create some of the strongest Black Ice armor available, Purified and Corrupted armor sets.

The Shaping profession will also be used to create items such as the Hammerstone Pick, which decreases the mining interact time when harvesting, and Pick Grips which reduces mining time but for only a short period. In addition to creating Picks and Armor, you will also be able to create Black Ice Enchantments that fit within the Overload enchantment slot in Black Ice Armor. These special enchantments offer great power, but decay with time.

Black Ice Harvesting is an essential part of Module 3 and your survival in the dangerous environment of Icewind Dale. You’ll need to stay alert for the corrupted creatures that roam Icewind Pass and Dwarven Valley, while fending off other players in the open world PvP areas. Succeed and you will be rewarded with powerful Black Ice items.
