Livelock: Meet Tuque - Kevin Neibert

By Jayson | Fri 29 Apr 2016 09:00:00 AM PDT

Hello World,

My name is Kevin Neibert, and I am the Lead Game Designer for Livelock. I’ve been with Tuque Games for 1.5 years.

Talk about some of Livelock's biggest influences.

While Livelock is set in a futuristic, dystopian world, it is heavily inspired by recent advances in robotics and artificial intelligence. Just this year, Google’s DeepMind AI handedly defeated Lee Se-dol, one of the best GO players the world has ever seen, showing just how far we have come since the DeepBlue AI beat Chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov less than 2 decades ago. As a huge Starcraft enthusiast, I am really excited to hear that Starcraft will be the next challenge for the DeepMind AI. GG

What is your background in the games industry?

Before joining Tuque, I worked as a Science Media Consultant for 3 years at Thwacke! consulting. During that time, I worked with the developers of Wasteland 2 and Outlast to help create a more immersive experience for players. My work was also featured on Gametrailer’s The Science Of Games and Kotaku. Not long after, I started working consulting for Tuque, helping them shape the fiction behind their game. We really enjoyed working with each other and the rest is history.

What can players see or engage with in Livelock that you are directly responsible for?

Being part of a small studio, I get to wear many different hats. I am responsible for designing the campaign story, character dialogue, player weapons, special abilities as well as enemy attacks and behaviors. Our team of talented programmers, artists, and sound engineers do all the heavy lifting, making sure everything works as intended.

Making a new title with a fresh studio, what has been the most exciting or terrifying moment?

Every day is filled with exciting and terrifying moments (sometimes both at the same time). The most memorable moments so far have been the release of the first teaser trailer featuring Hex, and traveling to PAX South to demo the game to gaming media for the first time.

What other hobbies or interests do you have besides gaming?

When I’m not working on Livelock or playing video games, I like to discuss all things game design on the @_DeepFriedGamer podcast and nerdy science stuff on the @usefulsci podcast. You can follow me online @KevinNeibert
