In 2410, Starfleet honors officers in command of a ship, starbase or other installation with a variant on the officer's service uniform that sports white shoulders. Officers who wear this variant don't necessarily have the RANK of captain, but they do fill the position of captain/commanding officer of their posting.

This variant honors the tradition of special captain’s jackets and vests seen throughout Starfleet’s history. This commanding officer service uniform variant is only worn on the service uniform. If a commanding officer is wearing the dress or tactical uniform, they use the standard officer color scheme.
